* ,■> HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 23. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner:—The mutton market is a shade weaker. Competition among River Plate holders is affecting the market very seriously. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is per lb; of whiob there is a very limited supply. The average price, to-day, for other and North Island mutton is 3%d per lb. The supply meets tbe demand. The lamb market is very quiet, and nothing is doing in this season's lamb. Tbe average price, to-day, for New Zealand lamb is—Canterbury brand 5d per lb. The beef market is very dull, and stocks of New Zealand beef cm hand are light. The supplies of River Plate beef are increasing. River Plate chilled hinds are quoted at 3%d per lb, and fores at 3d per lb. The butter market has declined, there being less demand. Buyers are holding back, expecting prices to go lower. The prioe of choicest New Zealand butter, to day, is 114s per cwt., Danish 119s, Australian Ills, Siberian 108s. The cheese market is quiet, but holders are firm. The market prospects are uncertain. The present market quotation is 63s per owt. The hemp market is firm with an upward tendency. There is a general and active demand in distant deliveries. Reports from Manila indicate a light shipment of hemp from that port. The price of New Zealand, "good.'fair Wellington," grade, on spot, to-day, per toD, is £32 10s, for January to Maroh shipments. The price of Manila hemp, "fair, current," grade, on spot, to-day, per ton, is £42. The cocksfoot seed markat is Arm. The average price for bright, clean, New Zealand cooksfuot seed, weighing I7lbs per bushel, ou spot, to-day, is 535. A few enquiries are being made by speculative buyers for cocksfoot seed. Trie wool market is steady, and prices are well maintained. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. Received January 24, 12.55 a.m. SYDNEY January 23. At the wool sales there was brisk competition for best greasies, which touched Is l^d. LONDON WOOL SALES. Received January 23, 9.18 p.m. LONDON, January 23. There is keen competition for all sorts at top prices.
