BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ABATTOIR COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Abattoir Committee waa held in the Borough Council Chambers, last evening, there being present:— Gi-b Ewington (chair), Morris, Temple, Elliott and Eton. An apology for absence was received from the Mayor. The Town Cerk reported that he had visited the abattoir at Christchurch, and supplied information as to the drainage, management, yard?, etc., and supplied copies of the forms of books and returns. The Engineer wrote covering a letter from JJartlett and Elder asking for an extension of time, for two months, of their contraot. He also reported about the drainage and recommended to substitute open concrete invert drains for the pipes originally put in the contract. The subcommittee had authorised him to purchase a Tangye duplex pump. He bad ordered a "traveller" from England, as nono were obtainable in the colony. He asked for definite instructions in regard to the erection of the yards. It was resolved: —(1) that the Committee express surprise at the unnecessary delaj in the erection of the abattoir in carrying out the work, and the length of time asked for as an extension; (2) that the contract time bo extended to March 11, and if not completed and ready fcr use by that date the penalty be strictly enforced, and if satisfactory progress is not maintained the Engineer bo authorised to put on additional men under the conditions of the contract; (3) that the Engineer be authorised to eubstnute opeu drains as recommended in his report; (4) that the Engineer prepare plans for catfcie yards as per sketch marked "B;" (5) that tenders be called for the work; (6) that a new wire fence be erected on the Norfolk Koad boundary to : the abattoir office; (7) that the question of the letting of the paddocks be dealt with at the next meeting; (8) the Engineer was instructed to apply to the Wellington Meat Export Company for permission to take water through their iaod-.
