MESSRS ABRAHAM AND WILLIAMS, LTD.
THEIR OPENING SALE IN THE WAIRARAPA. A TRIBUTE TO LOWES AND lORNS. Messrs Abraham aud Wiliams, Ltd., who recently purchased the well-known auctioneering business of Messrs Lowes and lorus, Ltd., held their first regular stock sale at their Renall Street yards, Maeterton, yesterday. There was a large attendance of farmers and stock buyers from all parts of the Wai'rarapa. Mr O. C. Cooper, in maldug a few remarks before the commencement of tho sale, apologised for the absence of the head of the firm, Mr R. S. Abraham, who was unavoidably detained at a large clearing sale on the West Coast. The main idea of the firm in opening up in this district was to establish a connection between the two coasts, so that when stock was low on one side they could try and quote a better price on the other side and vice versa. Referring to the firm of Messrs Lowes and lorns, Ltd., Mr CooDer said that they had been transacting business in the Wairarapa for thirty years, and at tho end of that time the) had come out with a clean record. He would venture to say that if the late Mr Wi/iiaui Lowes were present that day he would feel proud of that fact. Mr Joseph lorns was, however, present on the ground, and ho was sure that that gentleman was proud to think that such was the case. (Hear, hear). No doubt those present were well aware that the negotiations in connection with buying a large firm like Lowes and Jorns embraced a good many worrying details, and before concluding his remarks he would like to thank Mr F. C. Lewis and the Directors of the firm for tho courtesy they haa shown during these negotiations, which were of a pleasant nature. Betoie Mr Gordon Eliot, their auctioneer, commenced the sale, be would like to have the honour of placing the first pen himself. This Mr Cooper did, remarking, amidst laughter, during the progress of the bidding, that "if the reserve were not reached the firm would make up the difference." The precaution, however, was not necessary, as a good price was realised in a very shoit space of time. Refreshments were then handed round, and a start was mad« with the sale, the hammer being wielded by Mr J. G, Eliott.
