SOCCER.

At North Park, Petone, these teams met in a representative game last Saturday, the local team giving a splendid display. Our correspondent writes:— "Never do I hope to see a greater contrast in style, which is the best spectacular feature any sport can hold. In such a clash the unexpected is just round the corner, and so it proved in this game. "When Upper Hutt United opened the scoring it was an eye-brow raiser. No danger was suggested when Goodman sent over with the greatest of ease a peach o±' a cross, and Kirkwood just as leisurely piloted the ball past Diamonds goalkeeper. The local team were giving a scintillating display and were definitely on top, and overran Diamonds defence. Kirkwood the home centre, scored three goals, making the score at the interval: Upper Hutt 4, Diamonds 0. The local team settled down to constructive ideas, and Hoey, on the left wing, went right through with a cleverly taken goal. The local team were in rampant form and B. Hoare beat three opponents and scored a pretty goal. The town team scored their solitary point, through the indecision of the local half-back. United scored two more goals, D. Dunn scoring one and Kirkwood his fifth goal. United's new goal-keeper, Newport, played a splendid game in goal. The cup won by the local team was presented to D. Dunn, the captain of the local team, by the Chairman of the Petone A.F.C., amidst the acclamation of the large crowd who were present. The donor of the cup commented on the splendid display of the local team in their first season of the Association code. The" secretary, Mr. A. S. Hepburn, suitably replied on behalf of the local team. The cup will be displayed in Mr. D. Clyde's shop window, Main Street, Upper Hutt, when it is received from the engravers, and players and friends will be notified through, the columns of this paper when the cup is on view.
