■Wellington, August 7. It is reported that the votes have been counted, and that there are 48 certain supporters for abolishing the provinces in the North Island. The bazaar in aid of St. Peter's Church closed last night. The handsome sum of 900 was realised in the three days during which it was open. August Bfch. The " Times congratulates the Premier upon having thrown down the gauntlet to so formidable an opponent as Provincialism. The other leading papers on the West Coast hold the same views, and advocate the abolition of the present system in both islands. Christchurch, August 8. It is confidently expected that Mr. Montgomery will bo re-elected without opposition for Akaroa. Ho has held several meetings, and has received unanimous votes of confidence. August 10. Mr. Montgomery was elected to represent Akaroa without opposition to-day. BLUFF, Angaeb 9. The whaling barque Ch*naa, owned by Messrs. Nicnol and Tucker, has arrived from Sydney. She is a splendidly fitted up vessel, and will sail on a cruise in a few days. Greymottth, August 8. The s.s. Albion arrived last night, and was tendered early this morning. She reports leaving Hobson's Bay on the Ist inst., and experiencing south-east winds and fine weather during the passage, and arrived off Hokitika at 7 'a.m. yesterday, but could not be tendered. She brings 61 passengers and 129 tons cargo for all ports. Auguust 10. Good reports continue to arrive from the Greenstone rush. Sixteen claims ha"ye been bottomed, and the parties at work have excellent prospects. The Rev. Father Balliard .left for Christchurch to-day. A magnificent gold watch and illuminated chain were presented to him yesterday. Tauranga, August 10. The Government steamer Luna arrived last night, after having placed live buoys in the harbor. She landed the Government monument to the deceased friendly Makotn Natives. The Luna left at eleven at night for East Cape, Poverty Bay, and will go thence to Napier and Wellington.
