THE MAYORAL CUP. (To the Editor.)

SlB, — We are drawing nearer the 21st of July — the day appointed for the above event to take place — and as the prosont holder, ! White Pine, has declined to be again noinii nated, and that three likely starters mentioned—P.B., Soft Goods, and Pill-box— have either broken down in the training, or their | backers have thought it better not to run them, as such has been notified, it is probable that there will only be two starters, viz., Knock-'em-down, who is brought out under the auspices of Young Brogden, and Editorial, who is looked after by that old vetsran, Cbaffcutter, assisted by Collar-and-Hames. Knock-em-down has won several Municipal Plates. His last victory was for the Eastern Stokes, when he beat Sawdust by several lengths. ' He ako secured a Provincial Stake, winning in a canter, his opponent Six-by-Eight, being nowhere \ but on trying again for a similar prize, he was completely distanced — in fact, was never m the running, was also unfortunate when ho contested the Mayoral Cup against Old Identity, not having the slightest chance. He lias, however, proved himself useful in Municipal harness, and: might make a passable leader. Editorial is only a "young 'un." His chief public event was for the Eastern Stakes about four months ago, which happened, by an extraordinary vacancy, through tfie holder, Sawdust, becoming incapable. He was found to be of such good stuff that there was no opposition, and he secured the prize by a walk over. He has a large number of backers for the Cup, and it is thought by the knowing ones that he -will secure an easy victory. I am, however, inclined to think that Knock-'ein-dovrn's" longer -training will pi-ore of immense advantage to him, and that the contest will bo a h ard struggle aa to who will reach the goal first, and would as soon take my chance with Knock-'eni-down as with Editorial. — Yours truly, Intee nos.
