Correspondence.

THE ALEXARDRA MAYOR. (To the Editor.) Sir, — In your last week's issue was a letter signed "Ratepayer," which was not very complimentary to Mr. Candidate or Town Clerk, and as neither of those gentlemen are inclined to vindicate their cause, with your permission I will attempt it. Although " Ratepayer " may be correct, yet I fail to see how either Mr. Candidate or Town Clerk is to blame, as I am credibly informed that the whole matter was brought before the Council, who actually refused to interfere, the Town Clerk informing the Council that their p'oceedings would not be invalidated, although one of their numbers was not legally elected, and cited a clause iv E the •Ordinance 'to that effect. Clever Mr. Town Clerk! 'Now, I am of opinion that when the matter had been brought before the Council-that both Mr. Candidate and Town Clerk should be exonerated from all blame — more particularly /the Town Clerk, who was very attentive in the opposite Ward in seeing ■ t that both the mover and seconder and candi-, \ -dftte'-hadipaid'their rates, -there isanjb»e v

to blame it is the Council — more particularly the Mayor. lam persuaded the funds of the Council would have b^een more judiciously laid out in procuring a legal advice than they were in prosecuting a law-suit about Avaf«r to keep a few trees alive. Go on Mr. Town Clerk aud prosper, and may you succeed in elevating Mr. Candidate to the civic chair. Trusting you will give this a place in your next issue — T am, &c, Anti-Ratmayeu.
