Great mortality, prevails : the death rate of last month is double that of the corresponding month of last year ; for this month it is already double that of last February. The' General Government have formally BUPn^nded Mr. J. DorEefc as Provincial Auulor. February 12th. Tfe police captured George Maurice Druinmoni, the absconding manager of theJProvincial and Suburban Bank, Richmond, Melbourne, on board the Mikado this afternoon, en mito for San Francisco. Tbg Luna sails in a few days to prosecute an elimination of the coast line, and determine tbe sites of several new lighthouses. She goes first to Akaroa to take in a quantity of sleepers for the Tiraaru-Temuka railway. Tho total imports of the Colony for the quarter ended 31st December, 1873, were £1,784(305 ; for the corresponding .period of 1872, £1,498,193 . The comparative value of the imports for the Colony for 18/2 was £5,142,951 ; for last year, £6,462.981. The exports for tbj Colony for 1872, £5,190,665 ; for last year, £5,613,7*11. o Feburary 11th. The Clerk of Works to the Harbour Board estimates the damage done by the late gale to wharves and the sea wall at a £1000. The repair of the vessels is actively proceeding, and shipwrights are in great demand. Benjamin Worthington, who was supposed to have been lo3t in the yacht Columbia, sunk near the Breakwater, chines from Nelson. It is reported that he .owns property there. He leaves a wife The body of Haatie, Worthington's companion, was found floating in the Harbour to-day. H. M. schooner Alacrity has arrived from Fiji. She brings full details of the hurricane. Karo Island suffered the most. Another severe gale at Ba destroyed trees. Portions of the wrecked vessels have been found on Ba coast, but not identified. The British Commission is continuing its labours. The British Government has determined to allow the question of annexation to be settled by the Natives. Two chiefs are in favour of the annexation. Two lane Island labourers on Boyd's plantation had a dispute, and one killed «the other with an axe. The ship Allahabad, with coal, from Newcastle bound for San Francisco, lost her charts, chronometers, &c , dxiring a gale on the coast '1 he cabin is a cemplete wreck. Captain Sellars, of the Southern Cross, who met her, gave his mate to pilot the ship into Auckland for repairs. The tug Titan, while towing iv the schooner Florence, got ashore on the South Spit ; the schooner also went ashore, The former will probably be got off next tide. The Florence is in a worse position further south. Feburary 11th. The steamers Waipara and Titan, and the schooner Florence, still remain stranded on the South Spifc, vAn attempt was made this mornin^to get off the Titan, but it was unsuccessful ; it will be, however, renewed this evening. CmtiSTCKURCu, February 11. The New Zealand WeJeyan Conference decided yesterday to send to England for three ministers. The Conference terminated to-day. I Invercabguli,, February 11. Waddell, a cattle dea e.% claimed in l^ie Distri t Court, to-day, £200 damages from the Superintendent, as proprietor of the Southland Railways, on account of his servants, the railway officials, having agreed to convey a heii'er belonging to plaintiff from Invercavgill to the Bluff. Through the carelessness of the servants fch«i»oifer-was put into n t-i-uck or van unfit for the purpose. The consequence was that tlie heifer attempted to jump out, and broke plaintiff's leg, incapacitating him for business. The jury assessed the damages at £200. Bluff, February 11th. The Governor's yacht passed here yesterday, bound eastward. Queenstown, February 12th. Mr. Shepherd addressed a large meeting at tho Arrow last night, under tho auspices of the Miuers' Association ; Mr. Harris, President, chairman. The meeting strongly approved of the amended Goldfields Bill. The The bill will be recommended to the Premier to pass next session. Mr. Shepherd obtained a unanimous vote of thanks. He denounced the obstructive influence of ce.-tafh Oiago gol'llields members last session.. The meeting agreed with him.
