WASTE LAND BOARD.

The usual weekly meeting of the members of this Board was held on Friday morning, when the following business was proceeded with : — FACTORY NEAB LAKE VT AKATIP. Messrs. Robertson and Hallenstein applied for the lease of, or to purchase, a piece of land between their mill site and Kawarau, on Lake Wukatip, for the purpose of era-ting a factory. — Bef erred to the District Land Officer for report. WAEDEN'B KBPOHT. The report of Warden Wood on the application of Gow's trustees to purchase 80 acres I of Run 328, for a homestead, was favourable. The Board decided that the District Surveyor should survey the land, and submit a report. BECTIOK 2, BLOCK IT., TVAIPORr. Mr, James Wright was the successful applicant for this section, but objections have since been raised to the sale. The purchase not having been completed, notice will be sent to the objectors to be heard next meeting of the Board. CASK FOE THE SXTPBBME COUET. Messrs Smith and Anderson forwarded a notice of the intention of Mr. Hugh M'lntyre to appeal against the recent decision of the Board as to Run 168. The letter stated that Hugh M'lntyre considered himself aggrieved by the Waste Lands Board's decision, and that he intended to appeal to the Supreme Court against such decision : also, warning the Board not to dispose of the land till such appeal had been heard-. — The Commissioner said this land was withdrawn from Male. — Letter received. W3T. CEESWICK'S APPLICATION. Messrs Connell and Moodie, on behalf of Wm. Creswick, applied for decision on his application to lease bush Reserve in an adjoining block, XVIII., Tuapeka East, and also for leave to construct a tramway under clause 170. The extent of the reserve is 100 acres. A report stated that the country was very rough. Mr. Connell said the granting of this application would confer a great public benefit ; the tramway, when completed, would cost nearly £1000. There had been no timber cut in that reserve for the last ten years. — Some discussion ensued on the ruling prices of timber. — The Board decided that the land should be surveyed by applicant, when a lease : may issue at £15 per annum, under clause 170; fencing, £2 10a per 100; firing, 255, delivcrod at Lawrence end of tramway. APPLICATIONS TO PURCHASE, Messrs. Connell and Moodie, on behalf of John M'Farlane, applied to pusthase ten acres for a mill site in Glenkenioh district, as per sketch, with runholder's consent. Mr. Connell stated that the applicant had expended about £1000 in improvements, and the Bawmill would be worked by •water power. ne submitted that, if this application was refused, a private wrong would be inflicted. — The Board were opposed to it on account of their prospective action in reference to sawmills. — A similar application from William M'Farlane was refused. , - BENHWAI. OF SAWMILL LICENSE. Messrs Connell and Moods, on behalf of Wm. M'Farlane, applied for a renewal of sawmill license, Glenkenich. Mr Connell said the applicant's position was very serious. The Government-were proceeding with great public works, and a large amount of timber was required. They could not have "their plum coke and eat it too." The timber would also be required for building purposes, and the Hoard would soon have the country about theirears. If they took the sawmill licenses out of 'fheir hands, what would the licensees do for their bread ? They would be ruined* men. This bush was not a small one, but' possessed thousands of acres. The CoMMissiONEßsaidhewasin favour last meeting of granting quarterly licenses. He thought they should issue one for three months, by which time the new regulations would be ready.
