Correspondence.
WAIKAIA TOWNSHIP. {To the Editor.) Sir, — Your own correspondent, in his reply to my last, indirectly infers that " selfish motives may have induced me to adopt the interests of the place ;" this, I take it, refers specially to Waikaia township, and as such, I do not deny being heartliy -inter* ested in its progress, but only in the same way as it affects the greater portion of the community as well ; and surely we have a perfect right to look after what we consider is for our own advantage, without our motives being questioned by anybody, not even by "your own." Then again I am accused of having exposed the nakedness of the land evidently referring to Frenchmans Hill. Mortal knows I had little occasion to do any such thins;, for it is the prevailing opiniou that it is sufficiently well exposed already without my interference. 1 should pity the benighted s- ranger on his way to this boasted business centre, for a township it is not. neither does it contain the elements for creating one, unless indeed it could be miraculously transformed by the aid of an earthquake ; nor can ihis be denied by " your own." Then, he goes on to state that the centre of business will be on Frenchmans Hill for many years to come and probably during the present generation. Truly this is a generation wise in its own conceit, 1 do not know on what basis he founds his belief for the mere assertion as it stands ia simply worth nothing without some corroborative evidence to support it- He next alluded to the Hospital and his allusion I consider reflects very little credit on himself. The committee appointed to select the site for this bnilding were men well chosen and als i quite capable of expressing the sentiments of the people and after some lit le difficulty wi h those whose interest in it was to have it built on Frenchmans Hill, it was overruled by a strong majority that the site be chosen in the vicinity of the Waikaia township, where it now stands; nor|couldthey haveselectedaheaJthiev or mare suitable locality in the district. The suggestion which " your own " makes in advising those who are the well-wishers of the Waikaia township to shift their abodes at once, is about the most sensible part of his letter, and gives good promise of being speedily realised ; already an allotment has been chosen for a chapel, which will soon be built. With the dawn of another year, an extensive place of business will be erected, and I can assure- him as well, that at the next 1 sale of allotments, which takes place at Lawrence in January next, a considerable number of sections will be disposed of, and even "your own" might do worse than become a purchaser. Nor would Ibe surprised if the Government, by whose authority this township was surveyed, and who. were the primary cause of inducing parties to. purchase sections, would direct the removal of their offices to the township chosen by themselves, and recognised by the community. Can you believe it, Sir, we have actually no recognised head or township as it stands. I have every reason to believe, however, that -within & much shorter period than "your awn " imagines, ; the Waikaia tawnship will form the centre of ! business for- thia district, and from that era shall I date the dawn of our prosperity. For the- future, if your correspondent intends to arguo the qneßtion of the Waikaia township, I will be extremely obliged if he will adhere to the point at variance) and not diverge as he did in his last, otherwise a correspondence on the subject wjll be- useless. — I am, o^c.j
