SCHOOL PRIZES.

(To Uie Editor,)

Sib, — I am told that it is intended to cease giving a prize gold medal at the ensuing Christmas school examinatiou. I write without appropriate evidence, indeed, with no evidence, but I, nevertheless, hazard the assertion that if economy is the cause of the change, such economy is based on imaginary, not real, fears. Why, sir, a few pounds contributed by Tuapeka's leading merchants would purchase a very excellent gold medal. As to the abstract propriety of giving a melal as a reward for intellectual superiority, both past and contemporary history approves the practice. — I am, &c.,

A Westminsteb Bot.
