(From, the Auckland " Evening Star") Oh is it true, sir, kindly say That you have taxed our lollies, And that upon some future day You mean to tax our dollies. thought, sir, makes us very sad, ■^^r And shades our simple pleasures ; To tax our mixtures is 100 bad — Our melting, sugared treasures. Pray tax chignons, and ladies' hats, And ducks, and geese, and pullets. And chimney pots, and goats, and cats, -And volunteers and bullets. But, pray sir, leave our sweetened joys, -And tax the people's follies, And do not check the girls and boys j From eating cakes and lollies.
