MOUNT BENGKIi ELECTION.

(To tfw Editor.)

Sib, — In your report of the Mt. Bender election meeting in your last week's issue, there are several misstatements — one of which I beg most emphatically to contradict. Mr. G. Mackay is stated to have said, " that if Mr. Beighton stood, he would support him." Now, not only did Mr. Mackay not say so, but at the meeting he got up and distinctly stated, " that although he had no in"tention of standing for Mt. Beoger " himself; yet he wished it to be "cluarly understood, that he had on "no occasion promised to give Mr. " Beighton his support." Tour local reporter makes no intimation of this ; but from his well-known proclivities, neither this omission nor the generally inaccurate tenor of his report excites any surprise here. It is to guard against any injurious tendency it might have beyond the immediate neighborhood of Roxburgh, that I now ask you to insert this denial. The dexterity by which a few humorous remarks of Mr. Ireland's are made the ground-work of an insidious attempt to place him in an apparent antagonism with tho Progress Committee, is characteristic of the source from which it emanates — and is appreciated as it deserves to be, One would have supposed that the result of a meeting of this kind — called, as you are aware, for the purpose of selecting a candidate, would at least be clearly and distinctly given ; yet your reporter neglects to ,record this — the most important part 'of the meeting. I now hasten to (Supply his omission to state, that at the close of the meeting, the Chairman iannounced the show of hands to be in 'favor of Mr. Ireland, as a suitable ! candidate by a large majority — a majority, I may add, exceeding 10 to 1 as against the other two candidates. I am, &c, Electoe. Roxburgh, 13th June.
