BEAUMONT ANNUAL RACES.
The above races took place on New Tear's Day. The weaker ivaa rather unfavorable, bein* terribly hot in the morning and wet in the afternoon. Still there was a very fair attendance. Five-'itths' of the visitors hailed from Lawrence, and several tame from Tapanui, Teviot; and other places. The racing was fairly conducted, was good, and gave general satisfaction. The various office-bearers acquitted themselves in the admirable manner they always perform duties entrusted to them. The creature comforts of those present were ministered to by u Mr. Sinclair M'Beatb, of the Crookston Hotel, and Mr. Rodgers, whose veyance met with general appreciation. The following is a detailed account of the various events : — Maiden Plate of 15 soys, "Weight for age. Distance, 1£ mile. "Beaton's Jackamary, lOst lib (Kelso) 1 A. MTherson's Beeswing, 9st lib (Mon-) agnail) 2 Dwyer's Dolly, Yarden, 9st lib (Quin) 3 J A good race. Beaumont Handicap of -20 soya., with a sweepstake of 1 guinea. Distance, 2 miles. Dwyer's Sultana, 9st 101 b (Kelso) 1 Peaton's Jackamary, Bst (Monashan) 2 Dwyer's Colleen Bawn, Bst (M'Kechney) 3 Sultana was the favorite, and her performance fully justified the confidence placed in her. ',The three started well together, Sultana lagging behind. T,he other two • kept in front till within about half a* mile from . the post, when^ Sultana went a-head, paßsed rtheiri; ana~vvon cleverly" by two lengths. Hurdle Race of 15 soys. Distance, 2 miles. Weight for age. J. M. Clarke's Falcon (Kelso) 1 M'Pherson's Gamecock (Wilson) 2 do Rambler (Owner) 0 Gamecock jumped off with the lead, but baulked at the first hurdle. Falcon negotiated it without difficulty, but Rambler fell, throwing his- rider violently to the ground, virtually putting himself out of the race. M'Pfierson pluckily re-mounted, but his efforts were unavailing, the others having got toofar a-head. Falcon's good jumping made up for his want of speed, and he took the lead early in the race, never was caught, and won easilj . Ladies Purse of 12 soys. Distance, 1| mile. Welter weights. Gentlemen riders. Dwyer's Sultana (M'Keehney) 1 M'Pherson's Kambler (Hewitt) 2 M'Beath's Scud (Draper) 3 Dwyer's Colleen Bawn „ (Davison)
A capital contest "between the first and second — the others never having a show. ; Consolation Hantkjoap of 10 soys. Dis-" tance, 14 mile. M'Pherson's Gamecock (Monaghan) 1 Dwyer's Dolly Varden (Quin) 2 M'Pherson's Beeswing 3 Q-amecock jumped away with the lead, and never was cafight. During the afternoon a 200 yards handicap footrac^ was improvised, the prize offered being £1 10s. . i entered, and were handicapped thus : Davison and- Edwards, icratch ; Hewitt, 10 yards; Hills, itf yardß, The latter did not start, and the prize fell to Hewitt, who won easily.
