Tuesday, 25th June. (Before Vincent Pyke, Esq., R.M. , and H. Bastings, Esq., J.P.)

Ah Sew and Ah Sam were charged on information with violently assaulting George Duncan, near the Beaumont, on the 22nd instant. Mr. Mouat appeared for defendants. The evidence of Duncan and his mate was to the effect that on Friday last they went to the spot where the assault was committed, and marked out a claim. When the claim was marked, a Chinaman came and endeavoured to pull the pegs out. Being opposed, he went away and came back with two other Chinamen. They pulled out his pegs, and held them in their hands. One of them took hold of complainant by the collar, and held a stick over his head, saying, "You fight Chinaman!" Witness was cross-examined by Mr. Monat, but nothing of importance "was elicited. In giving judgment the Resident Magistrate remarked that our Eastern friends, where they congregate in numbers, displayed a spirit which, if not checked, might possibly lead to serious results, and the Bench was determined' to put a stop to it. The Chinese in the province had equal justice meted out to them, but the rights of Britons must be protected. In this instance a fine would be inflicted, but in any future case of a like kiud the offenders would be sent, to gaol. Ah Sew, being the niost violent, would be fined £2, and costs of court, with the alternative of fourteen days' imprisonment, with hard labour ; and Ah Sam would be fined £1, or one week's 'hard labour.
