LAWRENCE TOWN" COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Town Council was held on Monday evening last. Present : the Mayor, and Crs. Coverlid, Walker, Williams, and Uren.
The. minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The following correspondence was read and received: — Letter from James Docherty, asking for an extension of the time of his lease of a municipal reserve. — Referred to Reserves Committee. Letter from Warden Pyke, enclosing an application from Mouat and M'Keay, on behalf of Ah Pew, for permission to divert the Wetherstones road, within the town boundary, for, mining purposes. The application, was refused, the Council considering it unadvisable to allow main roads to be interfered with.
' A. Ferguson's account for advertising and printing, £4 2s. 6d., and J. Downey's account for gravelling, £2, were referred to the Finance Committee.
The Finance Committee's report, stating that payments to the amount of £9 3s. 6d. had been made, was received and adopted.
The report of the Public Works Committee stated that the storm channel had been properly reformed, and that Fon<r Lean's bond "had been cancelled. It recommended the formation of 5 chains of roadway in Reastreet, at a -cost of £15 ; the construction of a bridge in lona-street, at a cost of £15 ; and that the culvert in Campbelltown-street should be attended to at once, in order to prevent its destruction. The report was received and addpetd, and the Public Works Committee instructed to carry out the recommendations contained in its report at onee r
The Reserves Committee's report recommended {the granting of a lease for 21 years of section 13, block 38, to J. A. Miller ; that the application of Mr. James Karris for the extension of the term of his lease of section 2, block 23, be .not granted ; and stated in ragard to Mr. H. F. May's application to occupy a piece of ground near the cemetery that the Council had no power in the matter. Received and adopted. In answer to Cr. Coverlid, the Town Clerk stated that lately he had been more successful in the collection of the rates. Cr. Coverlid stated that sevepal people had informed him that they did not intend to pay their rates until after the time prescribed; so as to . avoid being elected councillors. " • On the motion of Cr. "Williams, secouded by C. Coverlid, the Town Clerk was directed to bring up at the next Council meeting a statement of receipts and expenditure up to the 30th June. The Council then adjourned.
