TUAPEKA REEFS.

At Gabriels reef, the prospectors have for the present discontinued tunnelling and breaking-out stone, and are now busily engaged in making ready to lay down the tramway. The machinery site is ready, and the erection of the machinehouse will be commenced as soon as the timber can be placed on the ground. Portions of the-machincry may now .be expected at any time. The crushing mill, if the contract time is adhered to, will be pulverising stone in less than 5 weeks. The machinery is to be placed at the lower end of the gully, and the stone will be brought to it by a tramway 400 yards in length. It was decided to place it an such a distance from the tunnel in order that, should it be found advisable at some future time to -work the reef at a lower level, the expense and trouble of shifting the mill would not require to be incurred. Ou the other claims there is no work going on. The contractors for putting in a tunnel for the Amalgamated Co. have jibbed on it, they having taken the work at too low a price to prove remunerative. On the northern side also everythingy is at a stand still. Clayton and party, and Vai'coe and party, however, it is expected will resume active operations as soon as satisfactory arrangements have been made with Mr. Clark. ' The Gabriels Rock Co. have let the sinking of a shaft on the reef to a depth of 20 feet to Mr. Brunton, at 21s. 6d. per foot. Mr. Brunton will commence operations at once.
