Applicafions from Messrs. Herbert and Co. to laf a wooden pavement on the footpath ;n front, of their premises in Boss Pice ; from Messrs. J. H. Pressly and Thjtnag Brunton to mine on Corporation roper- ty ; and from Mr. M'Tagi gart to instruct a crossing on the footpath injßoss Place, were referred to the Public iVorks Committee. • A leijer from the Provincial Treasurer, stating the amount of subsidy due, '£164, a,d been forwarded, was read. The 'inaiice Committee's report FTo. 4 was re, r and adopted. The report of the Reserve and Legislative Committee was read, It recommended tho Council not
to oppose- the closing of Canna-street by the Hospital Committee, as such a step would not cause any inconvenience to any, body, or appreciably -injure the property in the neighbourhood ; and to grant permission to Andersen and party to work a r[uart2 reef on the reservoir reserve, subject to the payment of a royalty to the Corporation of 10 per cent, of the gross proceeds; and the execution of a bond to maintain the water channel and fill up holes, &c, where required. Cr. Mears objected to the report. The first portion of it. he considered was decidedly opposed to facts, and by adopting it the Council would be disregarding the interests of the ratepayers. As to the latter part, it seemed strange that whenever a Chinaman or a stranger asked permission to mine on Corporation ground, it was granted without question. Now aparty of ratepayers wished to prospect for a quartz reef on a reserve, it was pro- j posed to charge them a royalty of 10 per cent. He moved," " That the report be referred back to the "Committee." Cr. Walker seconded the motion. After a discussion, Cr. Mears withdrew his proposition, and the two parts of the report were put for adoption separately The part referring to the closing of Canna street was thrown out, and the part relating to Anderson's application adopted. Cr Mears presented a petition, signed by fifty-four ratepayers, resident in Koss Place, praying for the extension of the water pipes in Ross Place to Whitehavenstreet, and drawing attention to the advantages that .would accrue thereby. Cr. Coverlid moved, and Cr. Meyer seconded, "That the matter stand over till next meeting." An amendment,, to the, effect that the petition be referred to the Public Works Committee to bring up a report at the next meeting, was proposed by Cr. Mears, secmided by Cr. Walker, and on being put was carried. The Town Clerk drew attention to the state of the culvert in the creek, and the Public Works Committee were directed to take action im the matter ; also to have the road to the Cemetery repaired. The Council then adjourned.
