GABRIELS QUARTZ REEF.

The result of the trial crushing of stone from the prospecting claim of the above reef cannot be regarded otherwise than eminently satisfactory. It demonstrates conclusively that the 1 precious metal is distributed through the quartz in quantities sufficient to render its extraction highly profitable. Two tons of stone, taken from the main reef at the lowest level, crushed at the Canada battery on Monday last, yielded loz. 19dwts. and some odd grains. This may "he considered an ounce to the ton. One of the prosspectors who accompanied the stone to the battery and saw it crushed, avers that it would go much more, as he considered a quantity of the gold was* lost. The prospecting claim can be so easily "andinexpensivoly worked, oncl there is such a bo'dj of stone, that if the ' reef' turns out anything like the'stifff crashed,- tlie.lucky owners cannot fail to re'allse' ' # hand"*some "fortunes, Many of the otheir claims on the line \of tfie" reef, are as favorably situated Po'r working' as £hat of the* prospectors. In the prdspecitih^V'lnim work"" is being carried onWith nfndiminfel^ed vigor. A shaft etr/ke theJodtf about .30 feet

lower has been commenced about 20 feet from the first one.

A reef, supposed to be a continuation of the one in Gabriels, has been found on Reservoir .Hill, in the township of Lawrence. Several good-look-ing specimens have, we believe, been obtained. The finders have asked the Town Council to permit them towork the reef.

Claims are being taken up three and four deep along the line of (Gabriels reef. Six fresh applications sor mining leases have been made which added to the two previously sent in makes a total of eight. We hear that a number of parties who have pegged off claims intend making similar applications. We understand that the day before the result of the trial crushing was known Mr. J. C. Brown purchased a share in the prospecting claim: The price has not transpired, but we believe it was a pretty stiff oee.
