LAWRENCE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

ANNUAL STATUTORY MEETING.

The annual public meeting for the purpose of electing a committee for the Lawrence Grammar School, and receiving the Financial Statement and Annual Report, was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening last. There was a fair attendance of parents and householders. Horace Bastings, Esq., was voted to the chair.

The Secretary read the minutes of the last annnal meeting, which were duly confirmed.

The Financial Statement of which bhe following in an abstract, was then read, received, and adopted.

Receipts :— School fees, £236 *ls 6d ; Government subsidy, £415 0s Od ; Debit Balance ; £-1-2 19s lOil.

Expenditure : — Balance from last year, £29 11s 7d ; Mr. Stenhouse, £275 ; Mr. Mqnzies, £150 ; Mrs. Dalo, £100: Miss Darton, £40; Secretary, £10 ; General expenses, £88 9s 9d.

The Report was then read from which we gathered the following items : — The attendance during the past year has kept up, and latterly has been steadily improving — the number on the roll is 170, with an average attendance of 140 for the last quarter. The Committee recoir mended that the fences be looked to, and a partition erected dividing the playground into two parts. The annual examination on the 21st and 22nd ult., gave the Committee much satisfaction. The attendance of the late Committee for the year was as follows: — Copland, 8 ; Bastings, 0 ; Jamison, 1 2 ; Harrop, 8 ; Campbell 3 ; Menzies, 11 ; E. Herbert, 11; Thompson, 9; Hayes*, 13.

In reply to a question put by Mr. Dartou, Mr. Bashings gave a Satisfactory explanation of hTs absence "from the school meetings dniing the past year.

On the motion of Mr. Armstrong, a vote of thanks was passed to the retiring office bearers and committee.

The Chairman said that from what he had read and heard, he believed great progress had been made in the school during the year. He had heard many say, that the last examination had proved the best and most efficient which had taken place in Lawrence. Great thanks were due to those who had so well carried out the examination; especially to Mr. Jamison and Mr. Menzies, who had worked so hard.

The Chairman, read the clause from the Ordinance referring to the election of a committee.

The following gentlemen were elected for the ensuing 12 months: — Messrs. Bastings, Jamison, Armstrong, Hayes, Thompson, Menzies, Jeifery, Abel, and E. Herbert.

A vote of thanks to the Chairman, closed the proceedings of the meeting.

The members of the new committee present, remained for a few minutes to elect office-bearers, when Mr. Bastings was unanimously elected president, and Mr. Hayes, Secretary and Treasurer.
