Sib, — Believing thatyour columnsare |t always open for the-.-tiissemtnation of news and the ventilation of public grievance^T "KaVfe been /ittdtttfed to take up my pen to fine! fault " with you^ Alexandra' correspondent. *" In his tetter .which •' appeared in your lssue '' of- the 38tb'ql£', hegives a 'condensed; amount of the ; examination "$f ' Alexanclra school, hut omits the names of the^ children who secured prizes. K^pjyjmg that your journal has an ' ex teii^ip .circulation in this district, I bUW. Jtaken the trouble to obtain this information^ and hope that you will give the same a place in your columns, as rib notice of the examination was? given, in^ our lp/jal paper. \ ;/ f * The school. -^as examined by the Rev. J. Jones, of Clyde. The attendance of the public /was very limited, consisting only of ' five ladies and. six gen^lejnen; but those present took gfeat interest in
th c "proceed ings. Whenthe exapiift^ was^cfc'Mifllecf;? ]^^fiap^^k^ ' the Rev, Mr. tysoa .to^'xpresV ln£ opinion regardmg^ t ihp sc^qol. .That gentleman said he found * the scHool ftp to the average, but certainly Jioth ing more. The ladies were then called upon to pass a verdict on the" ■ Schoolmistress, and Panav pleased' «to say Miss Eraser came out with- flying, ccolors—n rs— in fact the improvement the girls have made. under her tuition is very marked indeed. • ■_ The following .'is a list" of the prize, takers: — : ■■ » ■ • >, Bth Class.'— Win,. te,lford,\ . Council prize as the best scholar in the school ; Thos. Robertson, '2nd. 7th. Class. — Jolin Thomson, 1; Emily M'llroy, 2. ■ 6th Class.— Jessie Telford, 1; Maggy Finlay, 2. , sth' Class. — James Gordon, 1 ; Annie Robertson, 2. • • 4th Class. — Katie Morkane, 1 ; Wm. 3rd Class. — Mary Ann Weaver, 1 • David Thomson, 2.
2nd Class.— Bella Telford, ,1 ; Isabella Gordon, 2. Ist Class. — John Breritian, 1; Annie
Bohning, 2. Girls under Miss FraseAs tuition. — Eliza Ferguson, I ; Emily M'llroy, 2 ; May Buckley, 3 ; Minnie Turinell. 4 ; Annie Paget, 5 ; Jessie Oliver; 6 ; Christina M'lvor, 7. . , • After the prizes were distributed the children were treated to buns, lollies, &c, but from what I can learn these were not paid for out of ihe funds the ladies have in hand, and the account your correspondent gives respecting this matter, I believe, is about correct. It is hinted that one of the ladies wishes the Alexandra Donkey to be sold (I guess Chappie would have no objection, if he gets commission, and T think we could spare a numbei; of such), and the proceeds placed with the £12 ss. for the pose of purchasing a harmonium, to purbe devoted- to a particular -purpose. I also hear that one of the ladies intends putting her veto on that. As regards the schoolmaster's popularity with, the ladies, I have little to say ; but Fam of opinion that he is not over popular with anyone about here. My principal object in troubling you with this is to get the names of those who won prizes piiblished, believing that it engenders a spirit of emulition amongst the children, the beneficial results of which are beyond question. I may state further that Mr. Theyers, with^his usual liberality, gave a book co each child in the school who was not fortunate efrongh to ,t;ftin a prize, hnt I am almost ashamed to mention that some parent threatened to throw the book so given into the fire, and carried his threat into execution — considering the gift too small for acceptance. You may easily guess the education of some residents here has been neglected. • I hope your own correspondent will not think I am encroaching on his province, or that this is written in an uh-' friendly spirit. — Yours, &c,
Alexandra.
