SPRING.
The blue-bells quake within the furze, The lark sings on the fells : The cowslips in the meadows nod, The lilies in the dells. O'er branch and bough, o'er bush and tree, The blossoms vfhite are strown ; The young leaves wreathe with teuder green Tho foot* of Nature's throne.. The apple trees .are pink with bloom, The hawthorn and tho sloe, In woodland glade, in brake, in hedge, Are white-with flower-snow. And from the cedar pipes the thrush, The blacktbird whistles shrill ; The water hen skims o'er the pool, The trout-leaps near the mill. The brown -bees 'o'er the lupius bask j Melodious at their toil ; The greyhen for her yellow brood Turns " clucking " up the soil. The first white butterfly expands, On yonder summer wall, Her down-fringed wings ; and 'neath the. eaves, The gathering martins call. And chirp, and twit, with amorous note, The prelude of their love ; And struts, and coos, and plumes his breast, Above the porch, the dove. O sunny springtide-! welcome back, Shy darling of the year ; Thine every tear is half a smile, Thine every smile a tear !
