THE MINING COMMISSION".

(To the Editor.)

Mistur Editor, — The Mining Commissioners say in their report wen referrin' to the sulrjec of registration and transfer of mining shares, " the present law is cumbrous and expensive." Many of us diggiirs don't bleeve 'em, bekaws we knue tliet enny man can go into the Warden's Court either here or at Lawrence with a buyer or seller, as the case may be, havin' a form with a stamp of the necessary value on it, and with a little assistance praps from our very obligin' Warden in the shape of a hint to insert the number of a certificate, do the business at a cost of three shillins and sixpens, as we diggnrs in a small way seldum require a stamp of greater value than one shillin', the remainin' two and sixpens bein' the fee fur registration. Imagin the feelins of three breefles barristurs sittin' there and seem' the thing done without their aid. Imagin also, if you can, one who vvud be a. lawyer if lie cud, suggestin' to the Mining Commissioners the present cumbrous nature of the law, and the whole thing is egsplained. Mistur Editur, the ease with which, we miners can do the tiling is the great fait. The present law don't make enny wurk fur the lawyers, that's a fact. I aiut't got time to say enny more on the transf nr business, as I >vant to carry you along with to me thet part of the report headed " Agricultural Settlement." After readin' the Wardens a long lecktnr to be keerful and guard against lettin' auriferous lands be taken up by agriculturists, thay propos to help him in this difficult mattur, by, first, doing away with advertisin' applications, and secondly, a little further on, thay propos to remove Wardens every three years. With regard to the first, it has been suggested tliet the individual who brawt thet forrard has been tardy in payin' his printin' account .durin' the late elekshuns and been dunned by the printer, seaks to reak his vengens iti this mannur. Ido knoe thet the elekshun for the Lakes was contested by Shepherd and Haughton, and I also knoe that Shepherd was defeated, and praps you knoe which of the candydates the " Wakatip Mail " supported ; do you think thet wud have enny thin' to do with the recommendation ? I don't say it wud, I only ask you, as Editurs of papurs are sposed to knoe every thin. With regard to the remooval of the Wardens, I heerd a man say thet it was his opinyun, thet the man who brawt tliet forrard was either a dishappinted snter in a Warden's Court or else a " bush lawyer " wots been pretty well snubbed by sum Warden, and wen he found himself in a position of authority cudn't resist the temptation of makiu' a display of it. I shud like to knoe who brawt forrard these motions, and who voted . fur 'em. T wunder if this - one abo'it removin' the Wardens came from Switzers? N. W. has been in grate.disfavur fur a long time past.' I only ask the question fur the same reeson befor stated by me. x Mistur Editur, take the advise the Commissioners give about the auriferous ground to the Wardens, and these '-two propersitions together, and tell, me if you don't think ' thet the movers were prompted to a seatin extent by privivte motives in bringin' thcim fofcrard. I cai't egspldin the apairent inconsistency else. ; I am, "Mistiir Editur,, " tf ' Yonx obedient servant, ' I '(■/•;• ■ .-. -Poor Digger. j Waitahuna, August 15. •"» j
