A REPLY,

' ' (To the Editor.) colunins r -that . the statements, in the explanatory letter signed "Justitia" were intended solely for his benefit. I can. safely assert that I believe him to he the only article (man I cannot say) in the Mount Beuger district who would clandestinely endeavour to injure a hard-working body of men to gratify a petty spite, through the medium of a paper published in another district. I gave him, therefore (what most of his acquaintances would hardly care to afford him), credit for the dastardly effusion at first sight, so his indignation

letter, revered signature, and all, was quite superfluous. Strange to say, with unblushing effrontery he appears to glory in his misdeeds. Some reptiles certainly deserve to be " scotched," if not crushed. It is doubtless galling for so perfect a gentleman and scholar to be annoyed by impertinences from "foul-mouthed cads," but then all great men are liable to detraction — even his compatriot and namesake, of Dunedin notoriety, .has been lately widely traduced per " Br,uce Herald," In conclusion, I would recall to his memory a preceipt no doubt inculcated in his youthful mind at the university at which he graduated. (N.B. — This is a gouk) I refer .to, " Civbrones ne irrita" &c. — I am, &c, Justitia.
