CHURCH OF ENGLAND CONTRACTS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — About three weeks since tenders .vere invited for the fencing in of the ground upon which the Church of Eng'and has recently bpen erected. T procured the specification, and found the f ime allowed for completing the work to >c three weeks. As the kind of timber •specified for posts (4x2 black pine) is not isually retained in stock by the timber merchants here, and as the ordinary time 'or obtaining supplies from Tapaimi or ruape'»'a Mouth saw mills would be from a fortnight to three weeks, I deemed if '.dvis-ible to point this out to the committee, which I did. They did not consider it necessary to extend the time, but incepted a tender I have endeavoured to ascertain the reason why this work has been pushed on in such a hasty manner, •md the only cause assigned is that a large number of posts lias been lying in one of the timber yards (which exactly s<uts the specification) for a considerable rime, ana one of the owners of the *.aid titnbei yard is a leading member of the Church Committee.

As the committee are expending money, a large portion of which has been subscribed by the public, I do not consider they have a right to favour any particular firm by specifying a tiino which would not enable tenderers to get their materials from their usual sources of supply.— l am, &c, W. Mears. Lawrence, March 22, 1871.
