"Wellington, Sept. 7, 4.35. p.m. A meeting of Otago members was convened by Mr. Brown to decide what action should be taken in recommending to the G-overnment the desirability of extending the Clutha railway to Lawrence. There were present — Messrs. Brown, Macandrew, Haughton, Bradshaw, Main, and M'lndoe. Mr. Brown stated the object of the meeting, and expressed a desire that the members should have an interview with the Government, and urge upon them the advantage of taking immediate steps towards the construction of this branch line; also to secure to Otago a fair proportion of the proposed loan, for water supply on the goldfields.

It was moved by Mr. Haughton that Mr. Macandrew arrange with the Government for an hour of meeting. The deputation met the Colonial Treasurer to-day at 12 o'clock. He promised nothing but what has or may be recommended by the Provincial Council of Otago. [The Secretary of the Tuapeka Railway Committee has kindly put us in possession of the two following telegrams, received by him yesterday, which, when put side by side with the Provincial Secretary's letter in another column, is cheering news for Tuapeka :]—

Sept. 7th, 1.25 p.m. A deputation of Otago members waited on the G-overrnment to-day. The proposed line of railway will have to be surveyed and recommended by the Provincial Council in terms of Act. — J, Macandrew.

Sept. 7th, 1.38 p.m. Favourable reception of deputation for Tuapeka railway. Power in Act to construct line on recommendation of Provincial Council. Survey may proceed after next council. — D. F. Main.
