ANNIVERSARY OF THE LOYAL TUAPEKA PIONEER LODGE M.U.1.0.0.F.
Tb® fifth anniversary of the above liodge was celebrated by a soiree, concert, sand "ball in the Athenaeum, on Monday «veoing last. Although the weather was very uninyiting, there was a large turn out. Upwards of 100 ladies and gentlemen sat dojyn to tea, which was supplied bj Mr, Wootton, and presided over by seyeraj. ladies. Judging from the inexhaustible supplies ,of edibles and delicacies with which the tables were loaded, we •imagine Mr, Wootton must have expected double the number .of people present. After the tables were cleared, N.G. Bro. A. Burns took the chair. On the platform with him were P.G. Bro. Coverlid, P.G. Bro. Hart, P.G. Bro. Harrop, P.G. Bro. Jeffery, P.G. Bro. Cox, and G.M. Bro, Fargher, of the Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge ; P.G, Bro. Tranter and N.G. Bro. Bulfin, of the Loyal WaitaMna Lodge; N.G. Bro. Gilroy, of th^lioyal Blue Spur Lodge; and N.G. 'j',Brbv Kilgerar, of the Loyal TapanuirLo'dge. In opening the concert', 1 , jtne : Chairman said that as he held in >Ms hand a very extensive programme^ and asmany were anxious to " trip the light fantastic," he would not detain them, with a long speech. He might state, however, that the Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge was still progressing. He was glad to say that both financially and numerically the lodge was in a thriving condition. He was glad to see a good sprinkling of Foresters present, as it showed a good feeling. The outside public appeared to think the two societies were not so much akin as they really •were — although working in a different form, they had the same objects in view.
The Wetherstones Glee Club then sung one of their choice selection of glees, and •we must congratulate them upon their effort on this occasion. They showed considerable improvement, which could only have been attained by long practice. Songs were sung during the evening by Messrs. Tranter, Williams, Kendall, Donovan, Grant, Ford, Russell, , Brown, Downes, and Master Peters, and Mrs. Cranley and Mrs. Marriott, and Miss Cox. N.G. Bro. Bulfin, N.G. Bro. Gilroy, N.G. Bro. Kilgour, and P.G. Bro. Cox, each responded in very suitable terms to the toast of their respective lodges. The " Order and District " was responded to by P.G. Bro. Coverlid in a neat and appropriate speech ; and Bro. Bennett, C.R. of Court Star of Tuapeka, A.0.F., responded on behalf of the' Order of Foresters. Two hours were thus very agreeably passed away, when, after a vote of thanks, moved by P.G. Bro. Hart, to the ladies and gentlemen who had contributed to the evening's entertainment, the hall was cleared for dancing. The arr*y of ladies and gentlemen who took part in the dance surpassed anything we hays before witnessed in Lawrence, and the orderly manner in which every dance was conducted, reflected great credit upon Mr, Mil}ar4, the M.C. on the occasion.
