THE LAWRENCE CEMETERY.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka] Times.)

Sir, — I am one of a large number whs think that Mr. J. L. S. Keen is entitled to the thanks of this community for the firm stand he has taken relative to the mismanagement which has so long been going on in the affairs of the Lawrence Cemetery. Mr. Keen wrote a strong le ter it is true, but in the opinion of myself and others, no stronger than was called for ; and as to the insinuation about "dogs," any person acquainted wir.h iEsop's Fables auct with histiry will sej that the allusion is merely illustrative ; consequently, for Mr. Donovan to be so much annoyed and to raake such an exhibition of himself as he has done is simply absurd, and a proof that the cap fits.

Now, Mr. Editor, regarding the ruling of the Mayor on Mr. Keen's motion on the Cemetery mutter at the last meeting of the Council, I never hoard of such, a tiling before as for a chairman to speak upon a motion and rule it out of order prior to its being seconded. Without a seconder it was not before the Council at all, and consequently not open for discussion ; and even had it been seconded, I think the Mayor might have allowed others to comment upon it before expressing Ms own opinion ; but to rule it out of order and. thus get rid of it -was certainly cowardly, to say the least of it. It was not out of order in any way, and the action of the Mayor must bo taken as most exceptionable, particularly as he presided not as Mayor, but as one of the Cemetery Trustees. I hope we shall yet see Mr. Keen's petition" presented to the Governor, and its prayer granted. —l am, &c., Jusrics. I
