As considerable interest Is beim? felt as to the intention of Mr Sedwood respecting his horse Manuka, engaged in the Melbourne Cup, we (" Nelson Examiner") may say that it is MrEeclwood's full intention to run his horse in Melbourne, and that he will be shipped by the next steamer via Hokitika after the Gothenburg, to sail on Monday next. Should the Omeo call here on her next voyage, she will leave for Melbourne about a fortnight hence, but failing this opportunity the horse will have to wait for the next of the Gothenburg. Supposing this to be necessary, Manuka will arrive in Melbourne about the sfch of October, which, to the 6th of November, will give a full month for the horse to recover the effects of the voyage. Manuka is now doing strong work,, and as we saw him only a few days ago; we can vouch fdr his excellent appearance. His companions to Melbourne will probably be Misfortune and Peeress, the latter having only returned from Auckland on Saturday last. The Force of Habit. —A friend called upon Peter Burrows, the celebrated barrister, one morning in Ms dressing-room^ and found him shaving, with bis face to wall He asked why he chose so strange an attitude. The answer was to look in the gla"ss. " Why," said his friend, "there is no glass there" —"Bless my soul!" cried Barrows, "I did not notice that before." Kinging the bell, he Called his servant, and questioned him respecting his looking-glass, " Oh, sir," said the 3ervant, " mistress had it removed six weeks ago." The correspondent of a Melbourne paper furnishes the following :—" What might be termed a novel feature in Oddfellowship will shortly take place in Ballarat: Some months ago the Ancient Order of Oddfellows in this colony affiliated with the Independent Order of Oddfellows in America, the latter of which, numbered 250,000 members, many of whom occupy a high position in the social and. political world. In the new ritual introduced by the American order there is what is termed the 'Degree of Rebekah,' conferred only on the wives of members. , A lodge in connection with tliis degree lias recently been formed in Ballarat, and will be opened in the third week of this month, for the purpose of initiating the wires of members into the mysteries thereof ; and as this is the first occasion on which ladies" have been .privileged to become practically acquainted with Odd Fellowship; it is ex-; pected that a very large number will avail themselves 1 of the opportunity. t Already a large number hare signified their intention of coining from Sebastopool^ The benefits accruing front the faithful performance bf the secret tf-ork yf thss degree are incalculable."
