RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before W. L. Simpson, Esq., R.M., and Horace Bastings, Esq., J.P.) Thubsday, Juxy Ist.
Liston v. Duffy. — Eor an assault committed by defendant on plaintiff. No appearance. Case dismissed. He Tie v. John Ah Loo, Chinese Interpreter. — Claim £18, for goods sold and delivered. The Bench stated that a letter had been received from defendant, stating that he was ordered to Queenstown, to assist the police in tracing out some criminals, and asking an adjournment for fourteen days, the case was accordingly adjourned for that time. • Horace Bastings and other Trustees of the Lawrence Cemetery v. William Mears, undertaken. — Claim £12 45., being amount of Cemetery dues for interment. The amount was paid into Court. Mr. Keen appeared under authority for defendant, and stated that when the account was presented, it amounted to £15 odd, that a sum of £3 odd was disputed by defendant, and if that amount had been taken off, he offered to pay. Mr. Hayes, Town Clerk, stated that he had frequently presented the account of £12 4s. to Mr. Mears, that he as often told him he had no money, and to sue him. There was an amount of £3 odd which he did not know who was responsible, he added the same to the bill, and when he found that the defendant was not liable, struck it off. The defendant never offered to pay, and his instructions were to sue. Verdict for amount paid into Court, and costs of Court.
