MEETING OF TOWN COUNCIL.
A meeting of Town Council was held on Wednesday evening. Present — Crs. Hears (in the chair), Keen, Henderson, *nd Meyers. The minutes of last meeting having been read and approved, The Chairman read • letter from Mr. John McNeil, Whitea»ven-»trcet, complaining thai there mm no acccm to hi* house, owing to the creek. He had erected a bridge at considerable expense, but it had been destroyed by horses. • Cr, Henderson moved "the letter should be referred to the Public Work* Committee." Cr. Keen seconded. He knew the case wat one of great hardship, the complainant having orected three bridge* altogether. The two first were flight eJ*ira, »nd were destroyed, but tha third waa a substantial erection, and had been destroyed by horse*. He ssid that complaints wer* laade of the hardship of *v man being fined because his horsa strayed within the munici. pality, but those whose property was ! destroyed by wandering animals suffered still greater hardship. He though* tha Inspector should prosecuta with more vigor, and represent the laatter to the KM. in its proper light, ia order to secure the infliction of a heavier penalty. The damage don® to property holders had never be*a adequately represented in court ; he- himself waa & sufferer to the extent of at least £10. Cr. Henderson said the bridge allu» dad to in Mr. McNeil's complaint was a iaost substantial one, and had been destroyed, h» balieved, by two horses. He wa* often annoyed himself by horae*, or rather a- horse, coming about his place ; indeed, tha othe* night the animal had helped himself to some vegetables which were lying in * tank. He had warned the owner of the horsa, and, if the offence were repeated,, would noi wait foe tha action of the Inspector of Nuisances, but would summons personally. Tha letter waa then referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter signed by the followingratepayers, Messra. Harris, Middlemiss, Andrews, aud Aimers, was then read, requesting that the building known aa " Meyers' old store," which encroached upon Bos»-place, should be removed. Beferred to Public Works Committee. An application from Mr. Mackney fo* the us© of part of th© pavement in liosK-plaea was granted. A latter from the Town Clerk of Dunedin, offering a fire-engine for sale* waarecsited. Dunedin, £11 14s. 6*5. ■ A report frora \ht IV>;itr V^orl;* |tuk,^ j-r *V-£ .ass? oi the Camp Hotel ; wre^lils, j:b» Inspector should be c-?lej<*ii to in his duty, and that tenj (lots should.be called for the formation of Lancister-etreei Mr. Keen mo^ed that tha Inspector of Nuisance* should be instructed to prosecut*- tha owner© of all horses straying within tha municipality with, tha utmost vigor, and to represent to tha B,M. the- damage^ done by such horses, asd press for a heavier penalty. (Th© Mayor entered at this stage, and took tha chair.) Cr. Mean seconded. Carried. Some conversation followed on the •übjeet of tha bye-laws, Cr. Keen giving notice- that h* should move the matter would be referred to the proper committee. The Mayor called attention to th© schedule appended to the Municipalities Act, 1867. Cr. Mears said something should be done to regulate buildings. He reI ferred to the new stables erected be- | hind the Bank of New South Wales, an erection he denounced a» a- dis- ! grace to the township. Something I should be done to prevent anybody destroying the appearance of the township in this manner. The matter then dropped, and there being no other business, the meeting adjourned for a fortnight.
