BREACH OF PROMISE OF MARRIAGE CASE.
In a breach of promise case tried at the Leeds Assizes, Mr. Baron Bramwell has* given the weight of his authority against bringingthose actions, except under special circumstances. They were often, said his Lordship, " very mischievous, and such as ought nottojbe brought." In the present instance, the promise to marry was very distinctly made ; but the Judge suggested whether, as th defendant's affection had departed, it was not better for. the young woman to escape a life of unhappiness than to have been married under such circumstances. The reasoning of the learned Baron seemed to have its effect with the jury, for they gave the plaintiff only £20 damages.
Some young men in G-eelong were amusing themselves on the evening of the 30th ult., when a squabble arose among them. One of them took up a gun and, saying "We'll soon settle i€" pointed it at his companion and pulled the trigger. He thought the gun was not loaded; but to his horror, it went off, and his companion fell dead,
