CATTLE OWNERS MEETING.
(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.) Sir, — I shall feel obliged if you will find a corner for tins letter in your issue of to-morrow. I observe from posters to-day that a meeting of cattle owners is to be held at Mr. Potts' Victoria Hotel on Monday evening, when business of importance will be*laid before the meeting ; and as it affects every individual owner of cattle on the goldfields, I hope the meeting will f be a bumber one. I may here state that there are other grievances besides sheep and cattle that affect us. I would ask— What has become of many of our fat cattle for the last three years ? Probably some one at the meeting will be able to solve this question. Whether there may be or not,l have no doubt many owners of cattle in the district can speak feelingly on the subject, as they are now minus their number. As for myself, I know that I can. For the Last few years I have lost a few annually. Hfeay be told that they have strayed, or (^■■•l^jholes ; but I answer they have I faneuiml^jg^^^orthe other ; and J done neither^ne^MWßßJi^i^Mvninind
I am perfectly satisfied ininy^Bqfcg n . that they have been stolen and sla^Tto tered. t shall only give one instance!^ substantiate this statement. On the 79P of last month, I had a fine fat rhoan com branded with a heart and the letter flty and a half circle and the letter R, weighing from 600 to 630 1b5., her stee/ also, about eighteen months old, follo/ing her. On the following day they yere both gone, and neither have been seen or heard of since. I had four went the same road last year ; and knowing that I am not alone in these losses, I trust that >every bond fide sufferer ja this district will attend the meeting, and let us represent to the Commissioner of Police, St. John Branagan, Esq., plist of our grievances in this resperti, and I have no doubt that gentleman will find ways and means to bring th<* wretches to justice. Let us try it, and I have no fear of the result So, I would say, be in attendance on Monday evening ; don't lose the chance, or you will be certain to lose more of your cattle, as it is a fact there are people in the district too lazy to work, and must have their meat, aye and their drink, at our expense. — I am, &c, Peter Robertson.
