PAEHGAROA MOTES.
(From our own Correspondent.) Spring opened particularly early this year, and unless marred by a dry spell setting in, the season should be a long and prosperous one, butter beinjj a very good price, while beef is bringing a very good return, several lines having realised £12 and £13 at the Westfield market.
Several farmers in this district are now running sheep, and so far appear to be getting very good results. Shearing will commence in the course of a week or two and the wool clip promises to be a very fair one.
The weather continues dry and farmers are wondering whether it is going to continue. If so there is likely to be a shortage of feed. Some are taking time by the forelock and preparing land for growing green feed for the summer months. A fair amount of maize is being put in—sufficient for local consumption, while oats are coming on well.
TheTeMatai sawmill, which was dismantled, is now being reerected on Mr Dwyer's property at Pongakawa. Some little difficulty was experienced, I understand, in obtaining water, but this has been overcome, and operations are expected to commence in a week or two.
The construction of the private telephone line will shortly be put in hand, the material being now on the ground. There are some twelve subscribers, and about 20 miles of line to erect. Many, no doubt, who have not yet joined in the movement will, when they realise the utility of telephonic communication, join the Club. The line is to be erected with the best jarrah poles and English wires.
Two miles of contract work have been let by the Public Works Department, from Paengaroa to the Mangatoitoi stream. The substitution of the contract system for the co-operative is looked upon most favorably. I understand these contracts will be finished in about 12 months, so that the time should not be very far distant when the iron horse will be running as far as Pongakawa.
