THE CASE OF McBETH.

T have received from Mr A . De L. W a rathei 1 discursive and long letter, which is intended as a defence of the man Mcßeth, who was turned out of the Public Library the other day and arrested by the police as a vagrant. The letter travels over so much extraneous ground that, even were 1 disposed for once to relax my rule in regard to the non -publication of correspondents' letters, 1 do not care to inflict ifc on my readers in exleitso. The gist ■•.!•' the argument, however, is that MclJeth, in his philo -Maori proclivities, was actuated by a feeling of sympathy with an oppressed and ill-used race, with whom both the Imperial and Colonial Governments had made and broken treaties. In conclusion, n»y correspondent suggests that Mcßeth should devote his attention to Samoa, where there is a fine field for the Anglo-Saxon race. Certainly there are attractions about that sunny clime which ought to be almost irresistible to a man like Mcßeth. But how is a man without means to transport himself over the sea a distance of 2000 miles, unless he can fly, or ride on the back of a dolphin? Moreover, the Germans and the Consuls in Samoa have a rough-and-ready method of dealing with agitators and philo-aboriginals, so that I fear Mcßeth would not improve his environment in the Navigator Group.
