Wellington, Tina day. The House wet at noon. Iv replying to questions, Government said-it would take slops during t'ue recess to settle outstanding claims under the Forest Tree Planting Act.—Eeplying to .Mr Guinness as to why the Collector of Customs at Greymomb charged duty on prints invoiced at 5d per jard and upward?, which hitherto had been admitted free, Mr Stout said! that when the Customs Bill passed it was clearly the intention of the House to allow cotton and dress prints in free; but attempts were bow being made to bring in most expensive prints free.—Replying to Mr J 0. Bucklaud', Mr Stout said that Pr You Hastet
would be only paid as Commissioner representing New Zealand at the London Exhibition ; several other Commissioners. might have been appointed without pay. —Mr J. C. Buckland contended that the Colonial Treasurer had informed the House that Dr Yon Haast would be the only Commissioner.—Mr W. Buckland said that he could produoe proof that the Government, had given Df Buller an understanding that if he squared the native vote they would make him either Judge ©fa Native Lands Court, or Commissioner at tbe London Exhibition.—Te Ao denied the assertion, and said the natives had voted as they thought best.—Mr O'Conpr thought;, it Unfair'for any''member to speak of natives aa Mr Buckland had done.—Mr Ivess attacked Mr Buckland for his remarks, and also Sir G. Grey for defending him, —Mr Uislop thought the attack unjusti fiable, especially when. made by a man who was so inferior in talent'and ability. as the member for Wakanui was. He opposed the appointment of ,a second Commissioner.—Mr Turnbull regretted what had taken place, and said if it con tinued he would call attention to strangers being in the gallery.— Mr Seddon said members should restrain their feelings, aiid part good friends.—Parata denied that he had been influenced in his vote. — Mr Stout Baid no one but Dr yo.n Haast would be sent Home by the Government; should other gentlemen go, it would be at their own expense. Dr Buller bad been recommended by Dr yon Haast.—The House went.into Supply, and at 1.5 p.m. adjourned until 2 p.m.
