The House met at 2 30 p.m

In reply to questions, it was stated that a consolidated mining bill would be prepared during the recess ; that the regulations as regards serge suits for volunteers were repealed, and it was not intended to increase the allowance to volunteers, and they would be supplied with stores from Government at cost price.

The House went into Committee to consider the following resolution :—" That the Government be authorised to contract for a service between Sydney, Auckland, and Honolulu, or Auckland and Honolulu, with efficient provisions for the carriage of the mails to. and from San Francisco, so that the whole between Auckland and San Francisco shall not exceed twenty days, at a cost to the colony (after com* puting estimated receipts, if any, from the other colonies) not exceeding £48,000, and failing such arrangements being practicable, that the Government be authorised to contract for a service between Auck land and San Francisco, or between Sydney, Auckland, and San Francisco at the game rate of time, at a cost to the colony (after computing estimated receipts, if any, from other colonies) not exceeding £23,000."—5ir J. Vogel explained the position of the service, and the arrangements made for continuing it.—A lengthy discussion ensued. Messrs Mongomery, Sutter, Fisher, Ke'rr, Buchanan, Hursthouse, and Beetham opposed the resolution, and Major Atkinson, and Messrs Eolleston and Stout supported it—Mr O'Callaghan moved, "That the latter portion of the resolution relative to the alternative proposal for £23,000 ho struck out." The Hqjiae went into Committee to consider the Supplementary Estimates :— Legislature, £413; carried. Geological and Meteorological, £242; carried. Printing and stationery, £300; carried. Stock Branch, £2500; carried. Miscellaneous, £122Q » carried. —Mr Sutter moved that the vote of £10,000, subsidy of £ for £ on the rates collected in goldfields counties, be reduced by £5000—r Mr Pyke said he had never heard the mining interest so vilified as it bad been this session. He wanted to know what it all meant—W. P. Buckland opposed the vote. He did not see why the goldfields should be treated in an exceptional manner from other districts.—Mr Turnbull supported the vote.—Mr Seddon asked the Committee to pass the vote.— The amendment was lost by 35 to 30.— Minister of Justice, £265. ; District, Resident Magistrates and Wardens' Pourts; carried. Prisons (salaries), £838; carried. Shorthand reporting in Supreme Courts, £500; carried on the casting vote of the Chairman. Conveyance of mails by sea, £500; direct steam servipe bonuses ; carried. Customs officers and services, £100; carried. Marine and harbors, £1210; carried.

In Committee of Supply, the following votes were agreed to t —Commissioner of Stamps, £4120; Minister, £278; Minister of Mines, £4860 ; Minister for Public Works (working railways). £1058; Minister of Defence, £1112; Land Fund Account, £30,081; State Forests Account, £8100; Public Works Fund (immigration) £157; and Bails-ays, £9487.—Progress was then reported, and the House rose at 2 a.m.
