CHRISTCHURCH.

Yesterday.

The lumpers at Lyttelton have struck work again, and this time the strike is not confined to a particular company as on the last occasion. A fortnight ago the Now Zealand Shipping, Shaw-Saville, Albion, and Union Shipping Companies combined together, end intimated to the Lumpers' Union that they would adhere to the rates of wages previously aiven in Lyttelton— Is 3d per hour and 2s overtime, the&p rates to prevail throughout the colony. An attempt by the lumpers to induce the shipping companies to alter their depision failed, and most of the lumpers hare refused to work any of the vessels belonging to the three companies. The Union boats Te Anau and Tekapo were worked to-day by their crews and a few immigrants by the Tongariro travelling by them. The lumpers continued working on the Kaikoura till 2 p.m., when they struck, demanding Is Gd per hour or 12s per day. The Lyttelton manager for the New Zealand Shipping Go. informed then that if they strnpk they would employ no more men belonging to tits Lumpers' Union, The steamer's cargo was then bandied by her crew, and it is expected she will be ready to leave at the advertised time. It is stated that s meeting of the lumpers is to be held at Lyttelton tonight, when Mr Allwrighfc, M.H.Ii., president of the Union, will endeavor to bring about a compromise.
