HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
The House met at 2.30 p.m. Replying to questions, it wag stated that if necessary a special board would bt appointed to consider the grievances of railway employe* in Southland, the members of such board to receive no remuneration ; that when the Government financial proposals were before the House, it would be considered what power should be given Government to relieve the de> prewion of the agricultural industry; that Professor Kirk bad been instructed to report on the disease of fruit trees in Auckland; that Government had not received any report on the working of the Contagious Diseases Act for the past year, but if desired they would procure one; that there was no reason why respectable natives should not obtain shooting licenses, but natives should respect the law relating to shootiDg birds out of season ; that the Government wbips were not authorised (o frank telegrams; that the Government bad not decided what representation should be made to Parliament as to holding their next annual National Ex. hibition.
The following bills were introduced:— Bill to define the hours of labor within the colony; bill to extend the boors of polling at Parliamentary eleotions ; Presbyterian Church Property Bill; Bepresentation Act 1881 Amendment Bill; Bible reading-in-Schools Bill; Alienation of Land Bill.
Mr J. D. Lance moved that all papers and correspondence relating to an inquiry held by the Christchurch Hospital Board be laid before this House.—Mr Bolleston moved that there be laid before the House copies of the rules of any cooperative freehold land association registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1877. Agreed to.—Mr J. Bryce moved for a return showing the number of blocks of native land the title to which, has been determined by the Native Lands Court from the date of its creation to 31st March, 1885, with the area and number of owners of each block respectively.—Mr Hunt moved for a return of the cost and travelling allowances drawn by each Minister and attend* ants since 1879, in each year. The Otago Marriages Bill passed with* out amendment, was read a third time and pawed.—The Patent! Act 1883 Amendment Bill, and the Mercantile Lav Act Amendment Bill were committed, read a third time, and passed. The House adjourned at 5 p.m. until to«morrow.
