The police have found the punt, bottom upwards, in which Liardet attempted to cross Lake Wairarapa. The fowling piece was found strapped to the side of it, and several other articles belonging to him were fastened in it. It now seems bejond doubt that the unfortunate man is drowned.
The Government have received plans of the new Custom House, Auckland, and they have been submitted to a board to examine. It is intended to proceed with the building as soon a3 possible, and on its completion, the Land department, Native department, and other offices now quartered in the old Parliament Buildings there are t9 be transferred into it. Government will ask Parliament to sanction the old Legislative site iti Auckland being handed over !to the University. ■ . It has been decided that the Janet Niceol shall remain at each Island three days, instead of two. Mr Bias, Postmaster at Auckland, proceeds to the Islands to arrange for a postal service. It is probable that the Queen of Earotonga will pay New Zealand a visit shortly. The body of a seaman belonging to th<v sfeanier Suva, naniw]. William Moore, which has been missing for some days, was found ia the water close to Queen's wharf this morning. During the break on the cable, the telegraph operators in the principal offices will work from 8 o'clock in the morning until 4 o'clock the following morning, in four-hour shifts. One of the cables across the Straits will be duplexed, and it is not expected that any serious delay will be experienced. Iv large offices the usual dosing between 5 and 7 o'clock in the evening is to be abolished until the repairs are completed. Cable messages hate been sent to Singapore for » cablerepairing steamer, but do reply has yet been received.
