AUCKLAND.

This day. The s.s. Janet Niccol for Tonga, Yavau, Samoa, and Tahiti, from Southern Ports, arrived on Saturday last, and she is to resume her passage on the 18th. The following are the delegates from the Chambers of Commerce; Christchurch, Mr Pavit; Napier, Mr J. W. Neil. By the Eotomahana, due here to day, the Dunedin Chamber delegate will be a passenger. Wellington will not be represented.

Last week rumours came from Welling, ton to the effect that an increase of duty would be made on sugar, tea, salmon, and candles. So far as\Auckland is concerned, the rumour has not had the effect of causing any heavy withdrawals from bond of the lines named.

On Friday last, the_New Zealand Sugar Refining Company paid their periodical duty on sugar refined since the previous payment; the amount paid by the com* pany was £4,666 13s 4d, which represented the duty on some 224,000 pounds. One firm on the same day paid duty on sugar for home consumption to the extent of £237 Bs, which represented some 20,000 pounds ; on tea, £841 6s 3d, paid for 50,492 pounds; for candles, £473 8s sd, paid for the release of 75,725 pounds ; on Saturday duty amounting to £4339 was paid for the release of 20,729 pounds of sugar, and £2918 was paid which represented duty on 1254 pounds of tea. The total Cua* toms receipts for last week amounted to £11,854 15s.

A very heavy fog overspread the town to day,. The North Shore ferry steamers had to proceed cautiously, blowing fog horns. It is the heaviest fog experienced for years.
