Professor Tucker, of the Auckland University, has been offered the professorship of classics at the Melbourne University.

The city expenditure for the ensuing ] 2 months is estimated at £76,991.

A deputation of persons opposed to the Contngeous Diseases Act waited on the City Council yesternight and requested that a poll of citizens be taken regarding the operations of the Act. Supt. Thomson reported that the Act had been beneficial in reducing disease, and had driven many women off the streets into domestic service, and soliciting prostetutiononce so common, was now unknown. It was decided not to comply with the request of the deputation.
