Fighting between Native Tribes. -2000 Rebels Killed.

London, February 23.
An engagement has taken place in the neighbourhood of El Metamneh between the friendly Arabs and a tribe of the rebel Hadendowas, when two thousand of the latter were killed. , London, February 23. The Colonial Offer. In an article to-day on the refusal of, the Imperial Government to accept additional colonial troops, the Times states that the reply is UDgrateful, and further expresses its opinion that the aid of colonial troops will be needed. The Standard says ■ the refusal is a distinct blunder, a fid characterises the reason given for not accepting the troops as weak.

Auckland. Yesterday. Mr A. D. Bennett's office was be* sieged by applicants this morning desiring their names to be placed on the roll of his proposed free naval contingent.. Among them were several ex-Naval officers, with most excellent discharges from the Royal Navy, and one with special certificates on torpedo and big gunnery and marine mine work. . .

Hazell, late, rough-riding .sergeantmajor in Her Majesty's service, aud now of the riding school on New .North Koad, has communicated with the Minister of Defence, offering, if required, his own services, and the use of his riding school, for instruction of a cavalry troop in mounted and dismounted drill, sword, carbine, and lance exercise, free of all charge, if it is determined to send such a force to the Soudan. Mr Bennett received to»day the following telegram from the Colonial Secretary (the Hon. Mr Buckley):—" Government tenders you many.thanks for your very loyal offer. The matter will be considered at a meeting Cabinet shortly."
