Sailed, yesterday afternoon: The New Zealand Shipping Company's B.M.S. Rimutaka, for Wellington, with New Zealand mails.

The Court of Appeal has confirmed the sentence of four months' imprisonment passed in April last upon Edmund Yates, proprietor of the World newspaper, for a libel on Earl Lonsdale.

The refusal of the Victorian Government to accept the offer of nineteen shillings in the pound from the liquidators of the Oriental Bank estate has been brought before the Courts, and Justice Chitty gave judgment in the matter to-day, deciding that the colonial statutes do not affect the claim of the Victorian Government upon the estate.

Proposals re Egyptian Finance.

v.M. Waddington, the French Minister in London, presented the counter pro* posals by the French Government for the settlement of the Egyptian finance (which have received the support of Austria, Germany, and Russia) to Lord Granville this evening. The proposals comprise a loan of £9,000,000 sterling beinar issued under the guarantee of the great Powers, a tax on all coupons under Egyptian bonds, and the nppointment of a Commis sion of enquiry into Egyptian resources.
