Her Majesty's ships Nelson, Diamond, and EspiegJe leave here to-morrow for New Guinea, where Commodore Erskine will formally declare British protection. The German warship Elizabeth left Port Jacobspn yesterday, and it is belieVed she is also bound for New Guinea. The New South Wales Government in reply to the Hon. J. Service Premier of Victoria has declined to join in o protest to j the Imperial Government against t!ie arrangement with Germany as to South Pacific annexation, on the ground that it would be considered impertinent for the
colonies to -interfere in the foreign policy of England.
[Received October 17,1.30 p.m.] Melbouene, This day. Arrived, this morning: Tarawera. The Tasmanian Government haa agreed to Hon. J. Service's proposal to protest against the inclusion of an Anglo-German Confederation regarding the Pacific Annexation. The N.S.W. Government has refused.'and so also has South Australia, pending the receipt of further information as to the alleged Convention. The New Zealand Government has not yet replied to Mr Service.
Adelaide, This day. W. Thow, Locomotive Superintendent, having been suspended in consequence of charges against him by his superior offi- J cers, Mr Mattinson, in the Legislative I Assembly, has given notice of motion tbereanent, which reflects upon the action of tho Commissioner of Works. The Ministry regard the motion as tantamount to a vote of want of confidence, and the House accordingly has adjourned until Tuesday, when the motion will be discussed. Melbourne, Yesterday. CoDJectnre and Flying J\b coutinue firm favorites for the Caulfield Cup. The former is now quoted in betting at 5 to 1, and the latter at 12 to 1. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. (Limited) held their second wool sale of the season to day. There was an excellent attendance of buyers, and the catalogue comprised 1370 bales. Competition was animated, and 1340 bales were sold. The market for greasy merinos was decidedly firmer, and the parcels offered today realised up to 10|d. Scoured wools brought to Is B^d, and a firm and active demand was experienced. Adelaide, Yesterday. The House of Assembly have passed a bill providing for the payment of members, but it is considered certain that the measure will be rejected by the Council.
