Borough Council.
The usual meeting was held last evening. Present—His Worship the, Mayor, and Crs Bawden, Carpenter, Kilgour, Mennie, McAndrew, McGowan, Speight, and Veale.—After reading the minutes and outward correspondence, the Town Clerk stated that £2366 worth of water supply debentures would fall due on the 6th proximo, and the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., the body holding the securities, had agreed to renew £1366 worth of them at 8 per cent. £4133 would become due in 1886. The Town Clerk was instructed to try and obtain two years' grace.—ln relation to an application made to Government for assistance in flood repairs, the Premier telegraphed—" Much regret money cannot be granted under Eoads and Bridges Construction Act. See no way of obtaining it except by ordinary loan. Money could be advanced on security Jof special rate in ordinary course, if authority of burgesses be obtained. Am very sorry fact of Borough having 4,000 inhabitants waa overlooked by Public Works Department in first communication." i and action in the matter was suspended until the Premier communicated-further information.—The following works were left'in'the.hands* of the Works Committee :—A complaint by T. H. Crawford as to the state of the water channel in the vicinity of the Kuranui Hill battery; a letter from Mr E. McDonald re Queen ptreetj aeit Pabau street, aug sug^tio^
repairs with Karaka Creek debris; an application by Dt Callan that the western side of Pollen street, between Pahau and Mary streets, be gravelled with the same material; and with an instruction to keep it steadily in view—in an Oliverian sense —the condition of Broad street, called attention to by Or Mennie.—lt was ex plained that the formation of the footpath in Pollen street from Sealey street to Mary street, had been authorised, but the Borough foreman had not yet had time to undertake it.—ln consequence of a report received that Messrs Stone Bros, had erected a dam at the end of the Hape Creek which would cause silting up, the Town Clerk was instructed to cause them to remove it, and warn them that they would be held responsible for any damage caused, by it.— The Foreman of Works reported the complete execution of the erection of breastwork for Karaka Creek, near Bull's battery, repairing wall of Waiotahi Creek, raising culvert at junction of Clarenceand Alfred 3treets ; laying a new culvert across Beach road at Amy street, and several other works of less importace.—lt was decided that tenders for a supply of water-supply material be called, and that the Believing Officer call for tenders for the supply of rations.'as the present contract of Mears and Co. expires at the end of June.—The monthly accounts were passed. ■
