BOROUGH TAXATION.
Cr Kilgour, who had given notice of motion baring for effect the adoption of the Property Tax valuation as the basis of Boreugh taxation, stated that he had postponed his motion in relation to this matter until the receipt af the valuation roll from Wellington, and he was glad he had done so, as he found on looking into it that were the system he first proposed adopted, the Borough would fall short in meeting its engagements. He would therefore withdraw his motion, but he thought the present an admirable time to discuss the question of local taxation. The value of property in the Borough, according to the Act, was £198,519, and fd in the £ on that was just about half the rates now raised in the Borough, so that to get what was required l|d in the £ would be required. The present rate of Is in the £ must be on a wrong basis as regards value, or the Property tax valuation was too low, and he did not think the latter was the case. Therefore, it appeared that the Borough valuations were excessive. He was glad snch an opportunity of this was presented to them.
