PARAWAI GARDENS.
Two attractions were presented here— the first being a cricket match played between the Thames Cricket Club and an eleven from the Herald Club in Auckland, which resulted in a victory for the local team by 97 runs. The day was a fine one. The local men, under the captaincy of Harrison, went first to the wickets and ran up a total of 55 runs, of which Airey contributed 17; Buchan with 8, Grubb with 6, and Egginton 5, beiiig next highest scorers. Waters, Goodman, Roberts, and Gillespie bowled well for the Herald. The visitors then went in and put together 31 runs — Pearson, Goodman, and Rowe making the best scores with 10, 7, and 5 respectively. In this innings, Buchan and JEgginton did all the bowling, the latter taking 5 wickets, while 4 were placed to the credit of Buchan. In the Thames second innings a firm stand was made by the local team, and resulted in 98 runs being made. Buchan played a capital innings for 37, Martin made 11, Egginton 10, Airey and Newman 8 each, and Thomas 7; the next highest score was 2. In this innings Gillespie bowled well, taking no less than 8 wickets. The Herald team followed, but owing to the capital bowling of Egginton and Bucban, especially the former, who secured six wickets, the innings closed for 21—6 of which were made by Eoberts, 5 by Pear« son, 3 by Bruce, 2 each by Botherham and Howe, and 1 by Waters, and 2 were credited to byes ; the remainder of the team failed to score.
In addition to the cricket match a programme of sports was gone through as follows :—
100-"sards Handicap, entrance ss. Firat prize, 20s ; 2nd, plated teapot, presented by Mr Cocks. The result was: —H. Botherhnm, 2 yards, 1; J. Eowe, 4 yards, 2 ; T. Cox, scratch, 3.
150-Yards Handicap,entrance ss. First prize, Encyclopaedia given by Mr MoLiver; 2nd, a new Hat, given by Mr Green.—F. Eotherham 1, H. fiother ham 2.
150-Yards Handicap, for boys under 16. First prize, 10s ; 2nd, pair of slippers, the gift of Mr Whitehead.—-W. Farquhar, scratch, 1; J. Farqnhar, 10 yards, 2; T. Kitching, scratch, 3 220-Yards Handicap, entrance ss. First prize, 255; 2nd, 15s. H. Eotberham (scratch), 1; H. Eoss (10 yards), 2; T. Cox, 8 yards.
One-Mile Handicap, entrance 7s 6d. First prize, £2 ; 2nd, £1. J. McDermott (scratch), 1; J. Eowe (75 yards), 2; W. Farquhar (85 yards), 3. 440-Yards Handicap, entrance ss. First prize, 30s ; 2nd, 15s. This was a splendid race. There were five competitors:—J. MoDermott (5 yards), 1; H. Botherham (scratch), 2 ; H. Boss (14 yards), 3.
There was ouly a moderate attendance of the public.
