EASTER MONDAY.

Yesterday proved a beautiful day, and afforded pleasure-seekers an excellent opportunity for enjoying themselves, which a large number of our townsfolk tried their best to do^ The sports at the Tararu and Parawai Gardens proved the main attraction, but the excursion to Auckland in the Rotomahana was fairly patronised, and riding and driving (in different directions, boating on theKauaeranga river, picnics on its banks, shooting expeditions in all directions, and a variety of other out-door pleasures were largely indulged in.

TARARU.

A capital programme of sports had been arranged to take place here, the chief attraction being the sweepstake race of ten local runners. There was only a moderate attendance of the public, but the events were all well contested, and everything passed off very satisfactorily. The following are the results of the events:—

Handicap Sweepstake Eaee, Ist dis> tance, 150 yds.—There being ten competitors, it was decided to run it off five at a time, the first and second men in each heat competing for final places. Herbert, who had taken second place, but was so much exhausted that he fell within a yard of the post, and Moorcraft passed him. He was assisted to his feet, and came in third, but a protest being lodged by Tregonning that he did not complete the distance, his running was disallowed, and the result was therefore —Tregonning (9 points), 1; Moorcraft (4 points), 2; Ogle (2 points), 3. For the third distance, the quarter mile, six started as follows:—Tregonning scratch, Moorcraft 6yds, Ogle 15yds, Herbert and Hall 17yds, and Godkin 18yds.
