London, December 5

A scientific expedition to explore New Guinea has been formed under the sanction of the Royal Geographical Association. The leader of the expedition is Mr Wilfred Powell, who, on the 13th ult., read a paper on New Guinea at the Colonial Institute.

The Calcutta Fxbibition was opened yesterday afternoon by His Excellency the Marquis of Hi pon. In the course of his opening address he expressed a hope that the Exhibition would lead to an increase of trade between the Australian colonies and the Indian Empire. The Duke and Duchess of Connaught were present at the opening ceremony.
